Propane Chillers: Cooling Solutions
05 December 2024
What is a Propane Chiller?
A propane chiller is a cooling system that uses propane (R290) as its refrigerant to absorb heat and provide cooling for various industrial and commercial applications. Propane is a natural refrigerant, Pfas chemical free, with a low Global Warming Potential (GWP), making it an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional refrigerants like hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

Features & Benefits of Our Propane Chillers
Aside from the refrigerant choice, our highly developed, TriSolve Propane chillers offer several advantages over other options in the market:
- ATEX-rated components: Includes a reciprocating semi-hermetic compressor, ventilation fans, and a leak detection system, ensuring safe operation and minimising the risk of gas buildup.
- Unique self-cleaning evaporator: Available on units over 30kW, with smaller units (up to 30kW) featuring a coaxial evaporator.
- EC fan technology: Enhances energy efficiency and reduces noise levels.
- Durable design: Built for specific processes, featuring a powder-coated, galvanized steel frame for added robustness.
- Electronic expansion valves: Found in units over 16kW, these valves optimise efficiency.
- Heat recovery option: Allows the system to achieve water temperatures of up to 65°C.
- Optional Inverter Control Pumps: Accurate fluid flow / Pressure reducing energy consumption
Why Propane Chillers are The Future of Cooling Solutions
Choosing propane (R290) as a refrigerant is a smart way to future-proof your cooling system, reduce operating costs, and enhance your business’s sustainability credentials.
R290 is a natural refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of less than 3, making it an excellent alternative to commonly used hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) like R410A. The European F-gas directive of 2014 marked the beginning of the phase-down of HFCs, also known as greenhouse gases. As a result, many refrigerants have either been banned or significantly restricted, leading to shortages and increased costs. With R290, these concerns are eliminated.
Currently, R290 is 50% cheaper per kilogram than R410A, and as HFCs are phased out further, this cost advantage will continue to grow. Additionally, R290 has an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of 0, is non-toxic, odourless, and as a pure refrigerant, it has no glide—ensuring consistent and stable operating temperatures.
For businesses aiming for a greener future, they should consider the Propane chillers route. At TriSolve, we supply a variety of chiller types among our Propane chillers…

R290 Chillers: Natural Alternatives for Cooling
While propane is highly flammable, concerns about its safety as a refrigerant are largely unfounded when proper precautions are taken. In fact, propane can be very safe to use with the right safety measures in place.
For example, installing heat pumps in open, well-ventilated areas can significantly reduce risks. Additionally, practices like pressure testing, proper commissioning, regular servicing, leak detection, and adequate ventilation systems all help to prevent leaks and ensure safe operation.
It’s also important to remember that gas safety isn’t a new issue. Many buildings are already equipped with gas connections, and LPG tanks and bottled gas are widely used. In short, safety shouldn’t be a concern as long as appropriate safety measures are considered and properly implemented.
Natural Refrigerant Propane R290 based chillers, in combination with the energy saving features we can provide, are one of the key tools towards achieving a sustainable and ecologically responsible, manufacturing process.
