R290 is a natural refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of less than 3, making it an excellent alternative to commonly used hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) like R410A. The European F-gas directive of 2014 marked the beginning of the phase-down of HFCs, also known as greenhouse gases. As a result, many refrigerants have either been banned or significantly restricted, leading to shortages and increased costs. With R290, these concerns are eliminated.

Currently, R290 is 50% cheaper per kilogram than R410A, and as HFCs are phased out further, this cost advantage will continue to grow. R290 Chillers: Natural Alternatives for Cooling

While propane is highly flammable, concerns about its safety as a refrigerant are largely unfounded when proper precautions are taken. In fact, propane can be very safe to use with the right safety measures in place.
